At Devastation in December 2021, Dante Drago took VPW New York State Champion Eric James to the limit. At the end of the night, the young contender came up short and the Throwback picked up the win to retain the title.
Recently, Drago took to social media to post that he wanted another opportunity at the New York State Championship and that if he got another shot, he’d be the champion. However, Victory Pro Wrestling management has other things in mind for Eric James.
VictoryProWrestling.com reached out to VPW Commissioner Kevin Fulton about Dante’s request to fight James again. “He’s a good kid, but he’s had his chance,” said Fulton. “Dante kept demanding another chance, but that’s now how I run things here. You have to “
Fulton then brought up Karlo Vice’s recent video on social media.
Fulton said, “See, Karlo gets it. Dante’s had his chance, now it’s time for someone else and I like Karlo.”
Despite picking up a singles victory in Victory Pro Wrestling in 2021, Vice has picked up wins in tag team competition with partner Mike Anthony. When asked if this helped in his decision, Fulton said, “Absolutely. A win is a win, singles… tag team… and Karlo is a winner. That is why he will challenge Eric James for the New York State Championship at VPW’s Before the Storm February 19th.”
The New York State Championship is the only championship that did not change hands in 2021. Eric James won the title in 2019 in a classic match against Steve Gibki. He defended the championship against some of VPW’s top stars including Mister Tibbs and Ryan Galeone. As a member of the VPW Triple Crown club, Eric James is one of the top stars in Victory Pro Wrestling’s history.
With the blessing of Commissioner Fulton, Karlo Vice will get to challenge Eric James for the New York State championship when Victory Pro Wrestling returns to St James on February 19, but will he be up to the challenge or will Eric James make quick work of the Rockstar Above You?
