VPW Champion Mister Tibbs stepped inside the confines of a steel cage to meet the challenge of Coach Mammone. Mammone had earned his right to challenge Tibbs by winning the 2019 Gold Rush Rumble, but the antics of Tibbs and The Influence – Jay Delta, Kyler Khan, and VPW Commissioner Kevin Fulton – forced this match to be a cage match.
On that November evening in 2019, Mammone would rise to the occasion and end the third Victory Pro Wrestling championship reign of Tibbs. The Coach Era would begin.
At VPW’s King of New York in 2020, Kyler Khan would be the next challenger for Mammone. Representing the Influence, his ultimate goal was not to dethrone Mammone but weaken him so Tibbs would get an opportunity to take his championship back. At the end of the night, the vultures in The Influence attacked Mammone, injuring him and preventing him from returning to VPW in February 2020.
At March’s VPW 142: Blood Sweat and 14 Years, Mammone returned, but he did not return wounded and weak. In fact, he was ready for a fight and looking to take on anyone in the Influence.
Khan was sent to finish the job and ruin Mammone for good, set up Tibbs for a rematch, and allow Tibbs to pick the carcass of a weakened Mammone.
Instead, Mammone came back strong, picked up the win, and was ready for any challenge put ahead of him at was to be VPW 143: Spring Fever. However, due to the novel coronavirus outbreak that would be the COVID-19 pandemic, Spring Fever, Upper Limits, and the rest of the 2020 schedule was cancelled.
Also cancelled: Mister Tibbs’ rematch.
When Victory Pro Wrestling returned to a full house in the Sports Arena at VPW 143: Homecoming, Coach Mammone defended the title against Kaide Lothbrok. At VPW 145: Never Forget, the champion teamed up with Jack Tomlinson after being attacked by Pretty Likeable earlier in the show.
VPW 146: The Showdown in St James and VPW 147: Disorderly Conduct saw Mammone defend the title against Gold Rush Rumble winner Johnny Collins, and VPW 148: Devastation, Mammone attempted to regain the championship at the risk of his career.
No rematch for Mister Tibbs took place in 2021, to which the Savior of Wrestling noted before his match with Dr. Cool Jay Klang at Devastation. “I never got my rematch,” he said, “and I don’t care who wins between Coach Mammone or Johnny Collins. At Before the Storm, I will get my rematch, and I will be VPW Champion again.”
The stage is set for Victory Pro Wrestling Champion Johnny Collins to defend the title against three-time former champion Mister Tibbs at VPW 149: Before the Storm.
