Last week, the wrestling world suffered a great set-back when the “Cuban Crippler” Ricky Reyes decided to hang up his boots and retire from professional wrestling.
Ricky is a former Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champion, a two time WWC World Junior Heavyweight Championship, and has held championships in almost every company he’s worked for.
That was no different in Victory Pro Wrestling. In 2014, Ricky became the third ever Triple Crown champion when he won the Victory Pro Wrestling Championship in the last sanctioned professional wrestling event in the Deer Park Community Center. In 2010, he defeated VSK for the New York State championship in 2010, then in 2012 he teamed with EJ Risk to claim the VPW Tag Team Championship.
For over six years, Ricky was the leader of Conflux, a group of bad guys that dominated VPW with a standard of excellence unlike any other group before or since. Under his guidance, the group of Jay Delta, EJ Risk, Xander Page, and Kevin Fulton captured title after title, dominated main event after main event, and defeated some of the best talent in the Northeast.
Behind the scenes, Ricky was a supportive, strong leader that laid down the foundation of VPW “Strong Style” as the head coach of the VPW Wrestling School. His experience traveling around the world exposed him to new styles. Ricky absorbed his experiences and presented them to the students in a way they could not just learn from but make their own.
His no-nonsense way of coaching extended in the ring, where he always pushed his opponents to be better. For this week’s Free Fight Friday, we go back to 2013 as Ricky Reyes took on VSK in a 30-minute Ironman match for the Victory Pro Wrestling champion at the famed Deer Park Community Center.
While he has retired from wrestling, Ricky’s legacy will live on with VPW stars like Phil Cardigan, Jay Delta, Mister Tibbs, Eric James, and VSK when Victory Pro Wrestling returns to Pro Game Athletics in Bay Shore for VPW’s 17 year anniversary show.
